Winter Nap

This little arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) was curled up for an afternoon nap at the Staten Island Zoo. It was so perfectly posed that I had to stop for a while and take some photos. The day was a cold one. I was jealous of how absolutely cozy the fox looked as it slept on a log that contrasted with its thick white fur.

Staten Island Zoo Facebook notes that when the seasons begin to change, the arctic fox changes with them. During the spring and summer, the fox has a very dark coat to match the brown elements of its environment. In the fall and winter, it turns white to match the surrounding snow.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The photo above was chosen as the top submission for Wild View’s Warm and Cozy assignment. Congratulations! Enter our current Wild View assignment – Red Pursuits.
