Red-shouldered Raptor

In the early morning hours, I arrived at Florida’s Everglades National Park. The sun was rising and birds were chirping. The animals were awakening. I drove slowly and observed my surroundings hoping to spot a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus).

Patience paid off. The park’s combination of woods and water is a perfect habitat for this bird of prey to perch silently among branches while hunting for its next meal. I photographed the hawk and thanked it for its time.

There is plenty to see explore and learn when visiting the Everglades. A tip is to remember that the best photos are taken with a long lens at a safe distance from all wildlife.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Hunters in the Sky assignment. Congratulations! Check out our current assignment Spots and Stripes.
