Adjust Our Focus

While driving around with my kids, there’s always a discussion about where to eat.

We pulled over for some snacks at a convenience store. My older teenager hopped out and went inside. My younger teenager stayed put and spotted a fly on one of her notebooks. She knows all too well I’m one of those weird dads who likes to take pictures of flies. Luckily, all my camera gear was close by, so I slowly put the large diffuser over my flash. My daughter handed me her hot pink notebook. The fly never moved. I took a few photos, rolled down the window, and let the fly out of the car.

Pictures like this can sometimes look fake, posed, or over-saturated. In this case, it was luck that the insect stayed put for a few seconds. The fly and its chosen background reinforce that insects are along for the journey, no matter where we are. We just must adjust our focus to see them sometimes.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Art in Nature assignment. Congratulations!
