Blending In

During spring and summer, along the coast of Península Valdés in Argentina, it is necessary to walk very carefully on some beaches. A colony of kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) has nests scattered on the ground that are exposed to the weather, predators, and scientists’ footsteps.

Kelp gulls build their nests on the shore using materials such as seaweed, small branches, feathers, shells, and, unfortunately, sometimes plastic. The nests, along with the chicks and eggs, blend in with the surroundings in some areas, so we need to be cautious when walking during our research.

In this photo, a gull chick patiently awaits the arrival of its sibling.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Spots and Stripes assignment. Congratulations! Check out our current assignment Art in Nature.
