Hawk Watching

- as seen by -

As many birds migrated south this past winter, I was glad to see this red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) remain in its home among historical burial grounds and green fields at the Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

Watching its movements throughout the day, I saw it perch while other birds of prey set to the air. I wondered why it changed its behavior so suddenly. Then, I noticed something fly into the windy sky — its rival predator, the bald eagle.

Katherine…lovely image of the Red Tail. I’m a raptor aficionado, so I enjoy all
Raptor shots. I’ve heard that Greenwood Cemetery has some interesting birds.

Thanks John! After 40 min or so exploring the cemetery during my first visit, I caught sight of this one perched on a young tree. I believe it is a local resident since it stayed close by and was very comfortable with my presence. Definitely an interesting place it has made its home in.

We have had a couple of Red-tailed Hawks nesting in our wooded backyard for the last three years. I am fascinated watching, photographing and filming their progression through their entire stay, seeing them raise their young, their fledging and ultimate departure. And we’ve watched the squirrel population diminish as the young fledges hone their hunting skills before leaving for greener pastures.

Thank you, Steve. Birdwatching is an excellent thing to do during social distancing. Here’s our current Wild View’s Assignment – Birds in Your Back Yard. We hope you share some of your hawk photos with us.
