Turtle Tally
- as seen by -
Julie LarsenIt was time for a turtle tally.
The Wildlife Conservation Society set out to gather baseline data on native turtle populations in the Bronx River that runs alongside the Bronx Zoo. We caught and released snapping turtles and red-eared sliders in a variety of sizes (the smallest above.) Species, location, age, and gender of the animals were recorded. Our vets collected blood samples to test for disease and pollutants. The information gathered will help to assess reptile and amphibian health in our local waters.
My role was a dual one: to take photos of the work and stay upright in a kayak as I floated by.
