Eagle Duet

This bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalu) nesting site has been used for years at Marston Lake in Denver, Colorado. On this sun-filled day, the male eagle was sitting on the perch, preening, while the female was on the nest, busying herself with their eggs. The male flapped his wings and called out. The female replied and joined him on the perch. They bobbed up and down and finally craned their necks to the sky. After their duet, the female returned to the eggs and the male flew out, likely in search of fish.

It was a display that I had never witnessed before from these majestic birds of prey.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Hunters in the Sky assignment. Congratulations! Check out our current assignment Spots and Stripes.
