A Hummingbird’s Cozy Nest

- as seen by -

Did you know that the ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is the only hummingbird species that breeds on the eastern seaboard of North America?

This is a photograph of a ruby-throated hummingbird adult female feeding her chicks in their cozy nest. There is intense motion as the arc of the branch supporting their tiny home sways in the breeze. Yet, mom is able to hover effortlessly above her chicks in mid-air and then nourish her babies despite the challenge of the wind.

Stacy, Marvelous photo. Love the shredded leaf nest. Is that an Oakleaf hydrangea?

Thank you very much, David! The nest was dangling from an enormous Oak Tree, not on a hydrangea. The ability of their mom to feed them mid-flight was phenomenal to observe.
