Nest with a View

Whenever we are along the coast of Maine, my daughter and I stop by Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park, a perfect place for osprey (Pandion haliaetus) watching.

This year, we arrive at the end of June, a little earlier than summers past. The ranger tells us there are osprey chicks in the nest from eggs likely laid at the end of April by the returning pair.

We can’t see the young ones yet, but they must be there. One parent stays put as the other flies to and from the surrounding sea, each time returning with a fresh catch in its talons.

Osprey like a nest with a view. They are partial to high trees where they can swoop down and “air fish” diving in feet first to snatch up a fish and then arranging it in the perfect position for delivery, upright and headfirst.
