Nailed It

- as seen by -

Julie Larsen Julie Larsen

A young osprey (Pandion haliaetus) spreads its wings as it nails a perfect landing on a perch at Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Maine. When this bird of prey reaches adulthood, its wingspan will stretch to about five feet – ideal for fly fishing in the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Osprey almost always dine on live fish. This youngster is clutching the last bit of a fresh catch flown in by its parents.

Osprey are a conservation success story according to Cornell’s All About Birds. Their numbers have increased over the last 50 years due to pesticide bans and artificial nest sites on human-built platforms.

Thank you Gail and John! Taking bird photos is exciting. I love it when they spread their magnificent wings.
