Behind-the-Scenes Heroes

Sometimes when I pick out an historic photo from our WCS photo collection for Wild View, I worry that what I’m choosing with my archivist eyes is not going to appeal to the eyes of photo buffs today — that it will appear visually mundane on this photo blog amidst the gorgeous, colorful (and usually horizontal) shots collected here. But I also know that like myself, Wild View’s editor, Julie Larsen Maher, loves the power of a photograph to represent something meaningful. That includes the everyday routines of some of the behind-the-scenes heroes of WCS’s zoos and aquarium, like our keeper, animal care, operations, restaurant, and maintenance staff.

Whether behind the tanks at WCS’s New York Aquarium at Coney Island around the 1904, as in the photo above, or at all of our parks during the current COVID-19 situation, these behind-the-scenes heroes have always kept WCS’s parks running, and I know that Julie and I, and all of our colleagues now and throughout WCS’s history, are grateful for the work they do.

I LOVE older photographs! They tell a story and is part of history…thank you for sharing from the archives! In many ways they are more interesting that modern photos.
