Eel Meal

While hiking through the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia to photograph wildlife, we noticed a great egret fishing nearby.

Jabbing its head into the water, the egret came up with something that seemed to be giving it some trouble. The bird walked toward the shore and then flew onto the bank right in front of us. It spent about 15 minutes dropping the eel it had caught and then picking it back up to try and maneuver it into a better position to swallow it. The eel gave a gallant effort but ultimately became a meal for the egret.

The photo above was taken mid-battle when things were temporarily at a stand still.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The photo above was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Surprises assignment. Congratulations!
