A Day at the Beach

Charles Darwin first visited and was fascinated by the Galápagos Islands more than 150 years ago. This archipelago of volcanic islands, scattered like small pebbles across a swath of the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Ecuador, is no less magical today. The islands are known for their many endemic species and the theories of natural selection and evolution that Darwin advanced and promoted after studying isolated populations of finches, thrushes, and other animals and plants on the islands. These concepts, accepted now, have generated much scientific, religious and public debate over the years. For the amazing species in the Galápagos, it’s all just a day at the beach (above, a Galápagos sea lion).

I was there. It is a beautiful place that we must cherished and conserve for future generations.
