Creepy Crustacean of Yore
- as seen by -
Madeleine ThompsonYou’re looking at a 1929 photo of a spider crab, taken by Wildlife Conservation Society naturalist William Beebe’s Department of Tropical Research. Beebe and his team photographed this spindly sea creature and hundreds of other marine animals during their pioneering Bermuda Oceanographic Expeditions to explore the science of the sea and its inhabitants.
You’re also looking at the inspiration for my Halloween costume this year. I may have some trouble getting through doors, but I think it’ll be worth it!
EDITOR’S NOTE: For October, we at Wild View are getting in the spirit of Halloween. We’re celebrating nature that often elicits alarm. The animals that creep and crawl. The full moons that brighten night skies. The bats, the vultures, the snakes. Swallow your anxiety and join us. Fear not, it’s actually quite amazing.
