A Motivational Monday
- as seen by -
Megan MaherIt was a chilly Monday morning in January. I was getting ready for work and looked out the window to see if any of the usual songbirds were up. I expected to see a few tufted titmice. Maybe a blue jay or a sparrow. I was surprised at what was sitting on a very near branch looking back at me – a barred owl (Strix varia).
Knowing this moment might not last long, I grabbed my camera and took some photos of my unexpected, but very welcome guest.
According to the Cornell Lab’s All About Birds, a barred owl is more commonly found when it is active at night—and a lot easier to hear than to see. It can pass unnoticed as it flies by noiselessly or snoozes on a tree limb.
After a short time, the beautiful bird of prey flew on and found a new tree to settle in, I felt very fortunate and thought to myself, “Now, that’s a motivational Monday.”
