Green Parrot Party
- as seen by -
Kelsey KovnerHumans may know how to make a ruckus on St. Patrick’s Day, but these emerald-colored parrots, called Cuban amazons, do it all year long.
Cuban amazons are found in pairs during breeding season, but flock together the rest of the year. Large, and loud, social groups give the birds a chance to chat, and protect them from danger. Think that Irish pub on the lower east side in New York is loud? Imagine dozens of these birds screeching and squawking all around.
While I have never seen these green-feathered birds in their native habitat in the mountains of Cuba, I can attest to their vocal strength. Here at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo, they squawk to each other, and sometimes even talk to themselves.
