Abstract Work of Art

The Toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) is a member of the toucan family, Ramphastidae, native to neotropical Central and South America. It is the largest species of toucan and has a distinctive appearance.
I spent half an hour photographing this toucan in the World of Birds at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo. It was a very cooperative subject, seemingly aware of what I was trying to accomplish. This close-up of its eye, with all the vibrant colors and textures, is like an abstract graphic work of art, and is my favorite image from our session.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Art in Nature assignment. Congratulations! Check out our current assignment, At The Zoo.
