Penguins in a Wondrous Place – Part 1

Paul Israelson Paul Israelson

Antarctica is a wondrous place to visit for its beauty and uniqueness.

During our first four days of travel, the temperature was relatively mild, and the sun was out. We saw Gentoo, Adelie, and chinstrap penguins, leopard, elephant, and fur seals, humpback whales, and multiple flying birds, including skua, Antarctic shag, and lesser black-backed gulls.

I learned that Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua), above, have a trusting nature and are best photographed at a distance for their protection. Avian flu had been found in Antarctica, which meant we had to be very careful to disinfect our boots and clothing when returning to the ship after each land venture so as not to inadvertently spread the virus to other locations.

When photographing penguins diving into the water, I did so from a Zodiac boat. The sea was choppy, making it difficult to keep the birds in the frame. I was successful in catching this one as it entered the sea.

Amazing shot that really captures the Gentoo’s personality.
