Whale Bond from Above
- as seen by -
Martin Brogger @tinchobroggerIt is the start of the breeding season in Patagonia. Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) are returning to Argentina’s coastal waters to give birth and care for their young. Thanks to drone technology, we can get rare views of whales from above and watch their interactions without disturbing them in their natural habitat.
I took this image of a right whale mother and her newborn calf at play. The calf stays close to her learning survival skills like moving and communicating in the ocean. The drone footage helps us to better understand whale behavior and shows how important it is to protect these breeding areas.
As the season goes on, more whales will arrive, and the waters of Patagonia become full of life. Aerial observations like these are essential for scientists to keep track of the whale population’s health. Drone photography is a valuable tool for documenting and studying these majestic creatures from a safe and respectful distance.

Drones are such a great invention, when used in the right way. To be able to follow and see these great mammals really close up, without disturbing them and interfering with their natural behavior, such a privilege.
