Bats – Not So Spooky

Bats have been the subject of spooky lore for centuries, and this reputation has been hard to shake.

I understand how the beating of wings on a dark night could be a scary occurrence, however, bats are a very misunderstood species. Working at Tolga Bat Hospital in Australia, I was able to get up close and personal with some of these cool animals. While some may think bats are all vampires that feed solely on blood, flying foxes only eat fruit and nectar. I was lucky enough to get a great shot of this black flying fox chomping on a piece of apple.

Hopefully this silly photo will show that bats aren’t as scary as they may seem, in fact, they are pretty cute.

EDITOR’S NOTE: October 24-31 marks Bat Week, an annual, international celebration of the role of bats in nature. For more information, go to batweek.org.

Love the close-up shot. I’d like to see more of different animals.
