Second Chance for Young Pelicans

A trio of brown pelicans have a new home at the Bronx Zoo’s Heart Lake.

The young pelicans were injured when they became entangled in “ghost” fishing lines (abandoned gear that fishes on its own) along Texas Gulf Coast. They were rescued and nursed back to health by rehabilitators at Gulf Coast Wildlife Rescue. The birds sustained permanent injuries that prevent them from flying so they can’t be released back into the wild.

Pelicans are designed to be the best fishermen of the bird world with their long beaks and skin pouches that expand like a huge net for scooping up fish. Watch ours gulp down their fishy meals during their feeding time every day around 4 pm.
