There is nothing like coming into work and hearing whistles of harmony as I approach my office building.

I think they can see me coming up the stairs to Astor Court at the Bronx Zoo. No matter how I look or feel, beatless or full of life for the day, they cheer me up with their saucy songs as if they are flirting with me when I walk by.

“I see you,” they must be saying. “We know you are coming to say “hello.””

The crooners are the lovely red-legged seriema – large birds from Latin America. They never fail to make me feel special.
