Sharks: New York Neighbors

Meet your New York neighbors!

It is amazing to know that sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) are just one of more than 25 species of sharks that share the waters of New York with us.

Here in the City of Islands, we are fortunate to be surrounded by a diverse ocean wilderness filled with an astonishing array of wildlife: fish, great whales, sea turtles, shorebirds, deep sea corals, and, of course, sharks.

And, it’s not just shark week at the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, it’s shark month, shark year, and sharks all the time. We hope you’ll join us as we discover and protect this beautiful place and inspire New Yorkers to help us take care of their neighbors.

Wow! I never knew so many species of Sharks called NYC home. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of swimming with Tiger Sharks while on vacation in the Bahamas. It was such an amazing experience to be so close to these amazing creatures.
