A Drink on the Wing
- as seen by -
Peter HudsonIn the desert, bats need to locate dependable water resources to stay hydrated. And, of course, they have to drink on the wing. I really wanted to capture the moment the water entered the mouth of this pallid bat (Antrozous pallidus), and at the same time, get its reflection on the Pond at Elephant Head near Madera Canyon in Arizona.
Many bats are most active after dark. To get this shot, we used an infrared trigger and several flashes. Then, we lined our camera up with the flight path of the bat.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The photo above was chosen as the top submission for Wild View’s Bat Heroes assignment. Congratulations!
Bat Week 2018 is October 24-31. Be at bat hero and celebrate the role of bats.
