Green Garden for Gorillas

Summertime is the season for fresh fruits and veggies, and there is nothing that a mom likes more than seeing her kids eat vegetables – especially if they were grown right in the backyard.

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo western lowland gorillas seem to agree. This year, we planted a garden that includes fresh vegetables and herbs right next to the Bronx Zoo’s Mouse House, so our visitors can get up close to gardening in the Bronx.

When we first developed this idea, we hoped that some of our animals would be able to enjoy its harvest. The gorillas were among the first Bronx Zoo residents to try our fresh produce including beets, leeks (above), and banana peppers.

Visit the Bronx Zoo’s garden every day through September 7th.

I had a garden for several years next to the gelada building specifically for them although I will say that the staff enjoyed the benefits as well. I grew tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, corn, peppers, lettuce, radishes, grapes and black raspberries. One year we even had a giant pumpkin.
