While strolling gardens in the Bronx for interesting subjects to photograph, I noticed a very large yellow squash blossom growing low to the ground and moved closer to investigate. I took several frames of this squash bee (Peponapis pruinose) emerging from the flower, but I wasn’t aware that there were several more bees deep inside of it until I viewed the images on my computer screen. Look closely for a yellow beetle with black spots also feeding within the depths of the blossom.
Squash bees are floral specialists foraging on the brightly colored blooms of various types of squash and pollinating between the plants.
