Matthew WassermanConowingo, Maryland is a known hotspot for bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) activity. Photographers from all over the United States come to visit during the winter months. Every year I travel to the area from Long Island, New York with the hope of nailing “the shot” we all strive for.
Usually, when I go to Conowingo, I try to get as close to the water line as I can for a better angle. On this cold, cloudy, bone-chilling day, I had on multiple layers and jogged in place to stay warm. Most of the action was very far away. Even with the largest of prime and zoom lenses, the birds of prey were just specks in the viewfinder. Then, I decided to try a different spot. An eagle dropped down to grab a fish. It banked a right turn and flew directly toward me. I was able to see her at eye level with her prized possession – dinner. It is my favorite shot to date.
I’m glad I have the image. It is a moment I will never forget.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as the top submission for Wild View’s Hunters in the Sky assignment. Congratulations!

Hi from Massapequa, Long Island. Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that you can get photo’s a lot closer than Maryland. Massapequa Lake, has been home to a Bald Eagle family. The entire town has been monitoring them, and their new babies. There is even a FB pages dedicated to watching them and photographs taken.
