Unexpected Cover

I was walking around a wash in southern Arizona looking for snakes. I had familiarized myself with what I might find there and had totally missed what types of toads might be around. There were red-spotted toads (Anaxyrus punctatus) everywhere.

Any spot in the wash that had shade had a few toads. They bounced away and became less and less obvious the closer they got to the rusting corrugated metal that connected the sides of the wash under the road. A single toad landed in the unexpected cover matching the colors of the passage perfectly.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s In Disguise assignment. Congratulations! Check out how to enter our current assignment, Hunters in the Sky, here.
