A Surface Perspective
- as seen by -
Jaylan DiazI have always had a fascination with marine life and a determination to share my underwater adventures with others. From the beginning, it seemed more like a pipe dream than an actual possibility.
Luckily, determination and a little luck led to a very special experience. I found myself on a charter boat trip from San Diego to Isla Guadalupe with two years of underwater photography experience, a Professional Association of Diving Instructors divemaster certification, and the desire to film great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) in the wild.
This shark (above) had just breached for food less than ten feet away from my diving cage. If my time shooting wildlife has taught me anything, it would be that the perfect moment to capture the speed and grace of these beautiful animals can be gone in an instant. I was prepared and glad I had more than one camera with me.
I spent several hours taking photos and video. I had completed a life goal that some may never have the chance to encounter in their lives. Now, I can share my experiences from our big blue ocean and all the wonderous species that live within.
