During the breeding season each year from March to October, northern gannets (Morus bassanus) build their nests on rocky cliffs, and occasionally on flat ground or on slopes near the cliffs. The nest is a trampled structure made of algae, plants, and other debris from the sea, mixed with droppings.

Often these seabirds do not travel far to obtain their building material, but instead steal from neighbors, or actively cut down surrounding vegetation.

Northern gannets are found near beaches and on crags but spend most of their time fishing in the sea. According to Cornell’s All About Birds, gannets plunge-dive for food as deep as 72 feet. They use their wings and feet to swim deeper in pursuit of fish.

What a striking image! I feel like this bird caught us peering into its home and is responding with this stare-down. Thanks for bringing it to us, Martin.

Thanks Ken! Yes, for a second the bird was distracted from its task and gave us that look.
