During a recent safari to South Africa, I came across a herd of approximately 50 African elephants (Loxodonta africana).

I was amused by these two calves. They were still learning to master the use of their trunks. Elephants’ trunks – long noses made of muscle – are essential for their drinking, eating, smelling, and communication.

Today, the world’s largest land mammal is in trouble. Illegal hunting and habitat loss are having a big impact on elephant numbers. Conservation programs are working to reduce the demand for their ivory and protect the elephants’ range.
