To the Victor, the Field
- as seen by -
Tim LewthwaiteI came across a group of red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus) spread out in a limestone-strewn opening littered with dead trees in Namibia. Two males were sparing as the sun blazed down on the parched earth.
I wondered how, in the intense heat, they had the energy for such a display.
Facing up, they dropped to their knees, and then exploded at each other, locking horns as dust and rocks flew through the air. After a few moments of intense clashes, one animal backed down and was chased off by the victor.
The conflict didn’t last long, and the loser was easy to spot as he fled the field.
