So Deer!

Lucy, the female tufted deer, is once again a mom. We’ve been waiting at Prospect Park Zoo, not so patiently, for the day and finally…

I’ve worked with all six of her previous fawns. It’s always a treat to watch them grow. But when Brownie showed up, it was extra special.

Lucy usually gives birth early in the morning, and by the time we arrive, all the hard work is over. This year, Lucy decided to let us join in the experience.

Just as the last exhibit was closing for the night, we noticed that she was acting differently. It turns out we got there at just the right moment. We watched the whole amazing birth. Of course, I was much more interested than her daughter Sprinkles and the dad Gage. The rest of the family came in, got their fill of grain, took a peek, and decided there were more interesting things to do.

Come to think of it, even Lucy took time out to nibble on some treats. From the time we first arrived, the whole process took about 25 minutes. And that’s including the little fawn’s first wobbly steps to his mom.
