A Passion for Penguins

It has been a little over a year since we received our colony of little blue penguins at the Bronx Zoo’s Aquatic Bird House. I remember when our curator first said we were going to change our little shore exhibit into a penguin habitat. I was excited. I LOVE penguins, but I was also nervous because I wanted to do well by the diminutive birds. I spent the next few months doing husbandry research while we renovated our exhibit. I even spent some time at the New England Aquarium with their keepers learning about their group of little blues.

All the preparation? Completely worth it. Our little blues arrived and have thrived. Each one has claimed a special place in my heart, from tiny little female “Bean,”  our smallest bird (above), to “Volvo” the bossiest little lady you can imagine.

Our little blue penguins are here to stay!
