Warmest Love in the Coldest Place

I saw this gentoo penguin with its chicks on a trip to the windswept coast of Antarctica. It was quite cold, and I dressed in protective layers, including a waterproof jacket on the outside, for the inflatable zodiac boat trip that took us from our ship to the landing site where the penguins were nesting.

Once there, I sat with the penguin parent for a long time watching it tend to its chicks, until one of its young posed just right. I positioned myself so the ocean and icebergs provided the best background. After about 50-100 photos, I captured this special moment.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was selected by our readers from many great shots submitted for our Birds assignment.
