Madeleine ThompsonAs you plan your Halloween costume this year, consider this: some animals come ready-costumed, like the caterpillar of the tiger swallowtail butterfly. See this little monster—one of the Bronx Zoo’s inhabitants in 1948—gazing up at you? Those aren’t actually his eyes. They’re eye-spots, likely meant to trick potential predators into thinking he’s a bigger, badder guy. (His ability to emit foul smells when threatened probably helps a bit, too.)
What are you going to pretend to be this Halloween? I hope it doesn’t involve any foul smells!
