Spotted Ships of the Namib

It was a typically hot – and I mean hot – afternoon along one of Namibia’s northwest ephemeral rivers – the Hoanib.

Before man-made water points were installed in the early 2000s, I had never observed giraffe in this area drinking free water. Nearly every day, fog provides the thirst-quenching lifeline to this environment and its amazing wildlife.

The giraffe strolled in front of me along this barren dunal landscape to a pool of water below the dune. And then, they bent down and drank! In all these years of exploring the Namib desert, this was a first!
