Double Take

Denise McCleanThroughout the winter and spring, my attention has been drawn to Prospect Park Zoo’s family of red pandas. This pair of cubs was born last summer, so everything is a first for them—climbing trees, snow, and people!
Watching the family dynamic of parents and cubs is also great fun. This species is normally solitary, so having a pair of frisky cubs trying to engage their dad in play is pretty amusing. The cubs also like to tussle over who gets the best spot in the trees. It seems they both always want the same branch.
These cubs, a breeding first for PPZ, will soon go to other zoos to start their own families.
