Working from home has been a big change for me after commuting to and from New York City for the past few years.

One of the best changes has been watching the local wildlife go about their day right outside my window. I have been lucky enough to see hummingbirds looking for nectar in my garden, robins nesting on my neighbor’s door, and this little white-breasted nuthatch, Sitta carolinensis, flying off a tree to get a treat at my bird feeder.

Nuthatches are active little birds often spotted moving down a tree in a vertical motion, head first. They have distinct black, white, and gray markings and are common to feeders. In New York, nuthatches can be found year-round.

While wildlife photography is not new to me, watching and photographing birds in my backyard will certainly continue after I go back to the office.
