Perfect Plumage
- as seen by -

The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), also called the Caribbean flamingo, is a large species native to the mudflats and lagoons of the Caribbean and Central/South America, where it filter-feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates.
I photographed this flamingo at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo, after it had finished a vigorous bathing session. As the tall bird shook off the water to dry, its feathers began to relax and return to their natural position, creating beautiful abstract patterns in the process.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as one of the top submissions for Wild View’s Art in Nature assignment. Congratulations!
