Symmetry

Every winter, we are treated to birds from areas further north making appearances in Colorado. Hooded mergansers (Lophodytes cucullatus) are among them and have been a favorite of mine for years. Cottonwood Lake in the central part of the state appeals to them, and on occasions, there have been as many as 50 of the small ducks on the water.

These fine fellows were swimming around, displaying for females, and their juxtaposition was fortuitous. I found a good spot and started shooting immediately as the mergansers moved in nice arrangements, including this symmetrical one.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was chosen as the top submission for Wild View’s Art in Nature assignment. Congratulations!
