Fishing Expedition – Great Blue Heron

- as seen by -

The big, bluish bird popped over the inky rocks and landed lightly without a sound. The tide had pulled out leaving small pools scattered among the stacks of slippery seaweed. The bird sank deep with each step, but a flutter of its dark and silvery wings pulled it free as it made its way along the shore. Suddenly, the bird stopped and tilted its tufted head to one side. Its tangerine-tinted bill shot like a spear into the unsuspecting sea life – its search for food complete in the shallows of coastal Maine.

Great blue herons (Ardea herodias) are iconic birds that range in various watery habitats throughout the United States and Central America. Known for their long legs and rapid reactions, they are appropriately adapted for a fishing expedition at the ocean’s edge.

Thank you, John. Birdwatching and bird photography are both wonderful hobbies. One can often lead to the other!
