The Keuka Lake Snake
- as seen by -
Julia GallopTraveling to Keuka Lake in New York to visit my aunt and uncle is one of the highlights of every summer. We swim, we boat, we have a good time, and we have a chance to see some wildlife – this time, a Northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) wrestle a fish for dinner.
My mother, my aunt, and I spotted the snake by a rock wall relentlessly trying to capture a fish for a meal. The fish, however, was also unremitting trying to escape the snake’s grasp. We watched the pair splash and grapple for a long while.
I decided to get close to this battle and take some pictures. It’s not every day that one gets to observe nature run her course as intensely as this. We left shortly after as to not bother the snake.
I hope you had a good dinner, buddy!
