The Nightlife

Nighttime in Costa Rica is teeming with life. The biodiversity in the rainforests there is extraordinary – owls, frogs, sometimes howler monkeys, and much more.

On a recent field trip to this country, I was out all day everyday on nature hikes recording a variety of species. When night came, I found it hard to sleep. I could hear the activity of the nocturnal animals and went out to see what the nightlife was all about.

I saw a lot of wildlife, but perhaps the most abundant were the frogs. I happened upon a pond where it seemed there were red-eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas) everywhere – a species that I had made a point to find.

When these frogs sleep, they fold their legs in such a way that the bright colors on their sides or toes cannot be seen, but when they wake up, their colors are exposed for an incredible sight.
