Best. Day. Ever.

I’ve lived, studied, and worked in East Africa for three years, in addition to supporting projects in Central Africa for many years before that. I have never seen an African wild dog, so this special encounter basically rounded out my bucket list.

We found a group of African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), all on a mission as they sniffed around our vehicles, oblivious to camera-wielding tourists. More dogs popped out of seemingly nowhere to join the search, and when we finally moved further down the road, we were treated to the excited yipping of puppies when the adults returned with food.

African wild dogs are listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their very fragmented populations are at risk from human activities and infectious diseases so this was a very special sighting that will remain in my memory forever.
