Backyard Bird List

- as seen by -

Chris Spohn Chris Spohn

Cataloging all of our local birds near my home in Pennsylvania seemed a perfect opportunity to educate my young family on native wildlife. With almost no knowledge at the beginning of the school year, we started to look out the window together and see what came to our backyard.

I created an environment with bird feeders near my house to bring the ground-feeding birds as close to the windows as possible. My daughters and I hide under blankets in our basement that serve as blinds so we don’t disturb the birds. We creep up to the windows where we observe and photograph birds like this northern cardinal from inches away.

EDITOR’S NOTE: For our current assignment, we’re celebrating birds. Send us your best for a chance to win Vanguard binoculars. In the New York area? Join us on May 9 for our annual Birdathon at the Bronx Zoo. Bring your camera and take photos for the assignment.

I love this photo! Cardinals on a snowy backdrop are always beautiful, but the high mag image of this guy blows me away – I love the texture of his feathers and little whiskers. Thanks, Chris and great idea for the family!
