Island Endemics

Indonesia is home to more endemic birds than any other country – over 350 species. Unfortunately, with pressures such as habitat loss and the pet trade, about one-third of these species is threatened or endangered. This yellow-sided flowerpecker (Dicaeum aureolimbatum) was caught munching on a piece of fruit in Northern Sulawesi. Though not endangered, it is one of three flowerpeckers endemic to Indonesia and found on the island of Sulawesi.

Indonesia’s size, tropical climate, and archipelagic geography support one of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity. The Wildlife Conservation Society has been conserving wildlife and wild places in Indonesia since 1965. Working closely with the government of Indonesia, WCS identifies critical conservation issues and develops science-based solutions to these problems that benefit wildlife, wild places, and people. WCS’s strategies include site-based conservation, scientific research, education, training, and capacity-building, and helping to shape sound conservation policy.
