Wait for Me!

Moving through the bushy savannah before sundown in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, we heard them before we could see them.

Twenty African elephants surrounded us as if we were part of the landscape. Like gray, wrinkly bulldozers they came, plowing through the thorny trees in their path. The mothers trumpeted, and their youngsters threw clouds of red sand. Our ranger explained that by letting the herd chance upon us, they’d feel more at ease.

One calf was cheerfully plucking stalks of grass, then realized its family had moved some distance away. With a little call, the baby elephant dropped its treat and chased after them.

This is that moment.
