Little Green Creatures

Ever sit on your back porch after a rain on a cool evening and just listen to the sounds? You would be surprised at what you find making them.

Florida provides a rich playground for various green tree frogs, lizards, green anoles, beautiful butterflies, and strange-looking insects. We have a resident gecko that makes a quiet chirping sound and a frog that lives on the swim spa that will wake the dead. It was these little green creatures that got me chasing them with a macro lens and started me wanting to know how to better capture them with a camera.

Lizards and frogs are a lot harder to photograph then the birds that are my usual subjects. I decided to learn from some professionals and recently took a macro photography workshop at the 2015 Florida Birding and Photo Fest this past year. This beautiful red-eyed tree frog from the Yucatan tropics was one of the “models” for the workshop.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This photo was selected from many great shots submitted for our “Green” assignment.

While the colors are the immediate feature of the image that grabbed my attention, it was the texture that kept me fixated. The epidermal cracks and crevices on display in this photo are so incongruous with the expectation of “sliminess” that these creatures typically provide. Thanks, Harry!
