Gorilla Toddler Time

- as seen by -

Gail Rogers Gail Rogers

Since retiring, I have visited the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo almost every Monday. My first stop is always the Congo Gorilla Forest. I enjoy watching the western lowland gorillas, especially when they first come out and are most active.

On this particular Monday in June, gorilla mothers Julia and Tutti were letting their babies play together. The juvenile gorillas were very lively and chased each other around.

As this was going on, gorilla mother Kumi’s little boy was watching his older siblings and seemed to want to be part of the action. Several times, he went over to his half brother and sister to join in, but his mother kept pulling him back to her. He finally got into the mix.

I snapped several photos of the three juvenile gorillas playing together, but this picture showed the pure joy in the younger baby’s face as he played with his sibling who looked back lovingly.

Gail, like most photographers now, shoots LOTS of photos, but her special talent is knowing WHICH are the very best, a rare moment of sensitivity, or beauty, or behavior on the part of the subjects. She deserves this recognition! Hope to see many more.

So glad your wonderful photos are being seen by more people now! I miss
being able to get there as often as I did. When Congo opened in June 1999
it became my second home. I became a gorilla “nut” when I was about nine
years old and saw my first, a gorilla known as Gargantua, aka Buddy, in the
side show of the circus in L.A.
